Types of High Blood Pressure Medications
There are many brands of high blood pressure medications out there, and each brand is placed in a class. Reguardless of the subclass, all of these medications are known as anti-hypertensive medications. Each class does have its own subcategory. The type of medicaiton you are placed on is determined by the type of high-blood pressure you have. The types that are typically used are diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, alpha-2 receptor agonist, combined alpha and beta- blockers, central agonists, peripheral adrenergic inhibitors.
Under each of these main types of medications, are the sub classes. These are divided by symptoms of blood pressure. This helps target the symptoms that are causing issues, and helps the doctor determine which medication is right for you.
Since each medicaiton has it’s own purpose, you may be changed from one medication to another a few times before most or all of your symptoms are resolved.
It is very important to tell your doctor about all medications that you are taking, including over the counter medications and vitamins. These may have an effect on the way that the medication works.
As always, it is important to follow all instructions that are given to avoid any side effects from the medication.
