IBS in Woman and Children
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a medical state when a person suffers from a perceived need to pass waste very often. Symptoms of this syndrome vary from patient to patient. IBS can be caused to any age group i.e. even children suffer from this syndrome. Irritable Bowel Syndrome in children and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in women differ in their nature and their side effects. In case of women symptoms are more acute during their menstrual cycle. This shows that their reproductive hormones respond to this syndrome. Some common symptoms of IBS are indigestion, bloating, abdominal pain, intermittent constipation, fatigue, backache etc. children suffering from this syndrome also show symptoms like nausea, headache or mucus in stool. Weight loss may also occur as the child avoids eating due to abdominal pain.
To treat this syndrome the doctor first examines the patient and interviews him to find out whether he is affected by only one symptom or a couple of symptoms. Then the doctor changes the diet of the patient and includes more fiber in the patient’s food. He also asks the patient to chew the food more thoroughly. Empty stomach should be subjected to fibrous foods like fresh vegetables and fruits. Drinking peppermint tea or oil helps soothing the stomach during an attack. It is suggested to take peppermint oil capsules before a meal. Some essential drugs which contain calcium, iron, multi-vitamins, multi-minerals and probiotics are also suggested. Lastly, exercising regularly is suggested as it keeps the digestive system strong and healthy.
