Paget’s Disease of Bone
Paget’s disease is the most dangerous and second most common bone disease in world. It is also known as osteitis deformans. Paget’s disease is a chronic disease which causes enlarged and deformed bones. Paget’s disease is a famous disease in world but most famous in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, in these countries aged peoples suffer more than younger peoples. The person who told about Paget’s disease, his name is Sir James Paget. Paget’s disease is caused by virus infection, virus that causes Paget’s disease like paramyxoviruses such as measles and respiratory syncitial virus. Paget’s disease causes weak bone resulting bone pain, arthritis, deformities and fractures, these problems occurs due to excessive breakdown and formation of bone tissue. Man and women are equally affected by this disease. Paget’s disease also occurs due to hereditary factor like father to child or grandfather to grandson.
This disease may localize to one or two areas within the skeleton, or become widespread. In this disease bone of the pelvis, leg, spine, arm, collarbones are most affected. When Paget’s disease affects the skull, the most likely seen symptoms are headaches and hearing loss and when Paget’s disease affects the spine, the pressure on nerves is increased which causes steal syndrome.
Treatment of Paget’s disease is endocrinology, rheumatology, surgery, neurology etc and drug therapy like calcitonin (Calcimar, Miacalcin), etidronate (Didronel), Fosamax (alendronate), and pamidronate. Surgery helps fractures to heel in better position. Sunshine and calcium helps Paget’s disease patient to cure as early as possible.
